After many visits to the VA Hospital, emergency rooms, and Doctor’s offices which still continue to dominate a majority of my schedule, I was left still with more questions than answers and no relief from my suffering. I had abdominal pain that was unlike anything I had ever experienced. I was violently sick with extreme digestive upset, bloating, difficulty breathing, and unable to take in food and only extremely small amounts of water.

The days melted into a blur of weeks, like a puddle of ice cream on the side walk in Summertime, wasted. If being this sick wasn’t bad enough, being a disabled Veteran, I also had to deal with the bureaucracies of a terminally broken system. After exhausting almost all options with a Gastrointestinal Specialist, I was referred for two radiation tests with Nuclear Medicine: the first was for an Emptying Study that includes eating a Radioactive Breakfast and the second was a HIDA scan of my gallbladder. Though it was just in the past few weeks that some answers have begin to present themselves, this Summer in the 602 has been brutal on many levels.

The main diagnoses is Gastroparesis —basically the nerves in my stomach stopped working, a paralysis of sorts, which makes absorbing nutrients from my food difficult. I am literally wasting away. The other issues that are coinciding is that my gallbladder is apparently only functioning at 20%, I have Gastritis which means the lining of my stomach gets severely inflamed and also ulcers in various stages of development in my esophagus and gut from all the digestive issues. These are just the problems that began June 3rd and don’t include my daily battles with chronic pain, Fibromyalgia, and PTSD.

Gastroparesis (GP) has no cure, doesn’t go away, and has limited treatment options, most of which are not suitable options for me specifically.

Once I was able to get the diagnoses of GP and better understand what was happening inside my body, it became quite clear that I was going to need some serious and dedicated support of my body / mind / soul. It also was becoming clearer that I would need that support independent of the VA.

I am fortunate enough to be working with two Naturopathic teams to help manage this experience. I was incredibly grateful to receive a gift certificate for Phoenix Natural Medicine & Detox Center so I could have a Heavy Metals panel completed. I tested positive for 11 metals and the three highest levels of metals were of Cadmium, Lead, and Mercury. Heavy Metals detoxing is most effective as an IV treatment and with Dr. Carmen Mora’s recommend protocol, I am looking at almost $2k of my own fixed income for 12 chelation sessions over 24 weeks. It will be extremely beneficial to complete these treatments as soon as possible, but my body isn’t strong enough just yet. Thanks to the incredible team of professionals at Revolution Health though, I know that despite what my body is going through, it is getting stronger. Being a patient at Revolution Health and of Dr. Julie and Dr. Beth is a priceless opportunity that has made an enormous impact on my well-being. Through each naturopathy, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, IV nutrient therapy, and massage therapy session their compassionate and informative practice has strengthened my confidence in managing this experience. (I can’t forget to mention that support mentally + emotionally has been a lifesaver in more ways than one. I have been seeing Dr. Leeann Rosckowff for over a year now and have nothing but the highest respect and gratitude for her existence both professionally and universally.)

    Heavy Metals Test

    Tell the I sent you!

    IV Nutrition

But I know I certainly couldn’t have survived this Summer if it wasn’t for my nearest and dearest. I have received generosity and love like I have never known before. I have friends literally helping to nourish me by making me food loaded with as much love as there were restrictions, getting me out of the house when I had been cooped up too long, checking in on the wife and I to see how we were holding up, taming mushrooms and making me kombucha, then there was all the hanging out and hugging it out, and dealing with my tear stained face and emotional waves of anger, frustration, and fear. These are all debts of gratitude I will happily spend the rest of my life repaying.

It’s OUTober, now what?!

I haven’t given a whole lot of info out publicly about what it’s been like for me so this is like its own coming out process. I feel vulnerable because of my appearance– since being sick I have lost a lot of weight rapidly, am losing my hair from nutrient deficiencies, and am always hot flashing and sweaty. I experience the most uncomfortable digestive happenings, have some odd dietary options, and get so exhausted I can no longer function, making socializing awkward. Many people have pointed out that I don’t look sick, or that I don’t act sick, or that since I smile so much that this experience can’t be that bad. I am reminded often that the squeaky wheel gets the grease so I should just fight harder, demand better, and be more vocal about what I am going through in order to get the support I need. And then there are the choice few who are so fixated on my physical differences that they become painfully oblivious to how deeply hurtful their inconsiderate opinions are.

My number one priority is staying nourished. Having a feeding tube or J-Tube, gastric bypass, or stomach stapling are not options I want in order to stay nourished so I have to get what solid foods I can in me (which is about 9 items mainly), supplement with liquid nutrition / IV therapy / herbs + vitamins, and keep hydrated. Managing my pain levels is my second priority. Between the constant stomach pain, frequent bouts of nausea, always feeling bloated and full though I am usually starving and empty, hurt back + neck coupled with Fibromyalgia, I have very hard moments through out each and every day. I don’t use pharmaceuticals, I medicate with medical marijuana, and engage in complimentary therapies that relax and refuel my mind / body/ soul. Keeping moving is my third focus, especially with exercise now restricted to only walking and biking (though I am still too scared to ride a bike in the city and am working up to it!!) but I have to be careful to not over exert myself because of my low caloric intake and depleted nutrients. I definitely miss yoga and having an active fitness lifestyle!!! My last priority is to find the balance of it all, allowing myself to process and feel each part of this journey, letting go of whatever thoughts and actions distract me from being the happiest and healthiest me, and reminding myself that I have enough, I do enough, and I am enough, just as I am, even in this experience.

But the road ahead is long and, even if I wasn’t already exhausted from the adventures of this Summer, there are still brutal conditions ahead where finding the balance will be the only key to surviving. There are at least 22 Veterans a day that can’t find that balance though and I believe that giving Veterans the option to seek treatment outside of the VA through the marketplace can make a huge impact on finding that balance.

This was a rough Summer. There are many more details and behind the scenes happening and lots of others I owe gratitudes to, but so far the Fall has brought some focus that the previous season lacked. With a new month beginning next week, promises of new adventures also wait ahead. And all I can do is smile through it all.

Top photo is of me currently on 10/26, bottom corner pic is from the day before I got sick, 06/02.

This was a rough Summer.
